Intro0:00
In the previous video we set up a cabinet and took the cutting plan from it. Now we go further: drawers, doors, grain direction, plinth and attic cabinet. The example is a TV unit.
TV unit / sideboard template0:14
We start with the TV unit / sideboard template. This is a low, wide piece with three compartments: two drawers in the middle, a compartment with a door on the left and on the right.
Adding drawers0:27
The middle compartment already has two drawers. Tap it: with the plus in the bar above we make it three. Every drawer automatically gets a front, a box and a bottom.
Drawer division0:40
On the right, under Drawer, is the division. Increasing makes the drawers taller towards the bottom, as in a sideboard. Equal makes them all the same height. With Manual you drag them to height yourself.
Slide type and box sizes0:54
The slide type determines the size of the box. Side-mount slides need half an inch of clearance per side; bottom-mount and undermount slides need less. Choose what you are going to buy, and cutlistlab works out box width, box depth and setback from that. The top view shows where each size sits.
Doors and hinge side1:16
Now the right compartment, with the door. Tap it and the door bar appears. With the first two buttons you set the hinge side, left or right. The fifth button, Two doors, turns it into a double door.
Overlay or inset1:30
The third and fourth buttons are Overlay and Inset: in front of the carcass, or inside the opening. Choose Inset and cutlistlab asks whether you really want both kinds in one cabinet; that is allowed, but the tool warns you. With inset the door becomes smaller, with a gap all round. cutlistlab works out the overlap and the gaps itself; you see it right away in the drawing.
Grain direction1:56
Under Grain direction you choose Nice grain or Least waste. Nice grain keeps the grain running the same way on every panel, as you want for visible work. In the cutting plan you can see the grain lines on the panels. Least waste lets the panels rotate freely; on a grainless sheet such as melamine that is always fine. The lines are gone, every panel may now rotate. In this cabinet it makes no difference to the number of sheets; with long, narrow parts it does.
Mixed materials2:29
The material does not have to be the same everywhere. In the cutting plan we first add an extra sheet: three-quarter inch MDF. Then we give the doors that material. Back in Cabinet design, the Construction panel reports Mixed, with the parts that differ. With reset you make everything the same again.
Plinth and base frame2:50
With a plinth of four inches you choose the construction. Sides through lets the sides run to the floor, with the plinth in between. On base panel lays the bottom across the full width and puts the sides on top. In both cases cutlistlab adds a ladder frame to your linear cut list: here six rails of rough spruce, so the cabinet stands on rails and not on the bottom panel.
Attic cabinet3:15
For a cabinet under a sloped roof there is the attic cabinet; that too is a new project. One side has the full height, the other the low height you type here. With Straight part you set where the sloped top begins. The shelves stay level; under the slope they become shorter by themselves.
Automatic splitting3:36
If you make a part wider than a sheet is long, cutlistlab automatically splits that panel into two parts that together form one whole. The orange shelves warn that they sag at this width; that calls for a divider. In the cut list and on the plan it shows as 1/2: part one of two. cutlistlab also reports right away that these sheets are only partly filled; a smaller size would be more economical.
Hardware: What do I need4:04
Via the menu next to the project name, Projects, we open the TV unit again. What do I need now also lists the hardware. The hinges per type: full overlay for the left door, inset for the double door on the right. Below that the sets of drawer slides and the handles. The quantities follow from your cabinet; you choose the type yourself.
3D and Exploded4:30
In 3D you can look per group: All, Carcass, Doors or Drawers. With the Exploded slider you pull the cabinet apart and see how the parts fit together. Useful during assembly.
Tip and wrap-up4:44
A tip from practice: buy the drawer slides and the hinges before you cut, and check the clearance the manufacturer specifies. Enter that in the drawer settings, and the box sizes come out exactly right.
