How to use it

Why 18mm for carcasses and shelves
18mm is the go-to thickness for cabinet carcasses and shelving, which is why it shows up in almost every plywood project. In inches it sits at roughly 23/32 in to 3/4 in nominal, so a North American 3/4 in sheet and a European 18mm sheet do the same job. The thickness gives a carcass enough rigidity for sides, tops and bottoms, holds screws and dowels in the edge without splitting, and keeps a shelf from sagging over a normal span. Thinner panels are fine for backs and drawer bottoms, but for the structural parts most people stay at 18mm, so it pays to plan those cuts well.

- Grain direction. Plywood has a visible grain. Mark a part as grain-fixed and it stays oriented the right way, so the face veneer runs as you want; parts without grain rotate freely to pack tighter.
