Breaking down plywood is the first real step of almost every project, and it is where things go wrong if you rush. A 4x8 ft (1220x2440 mm) sheet is unwieldy, the blade can pinch if the panel sags, and one crooked first cut throws off everything after it. You do not need a big table saw. A circular saw, a straight edge to guide it, and a bit of method will turn a full sheet into clean, square pieces by yourself.
Support the sheet so it cannot sag
The single biggest improvement is good support. Lay the sheet flat on a sheet of rigid foam board, or on a cheap sacrificial sheet across a pair of sawhorses, with the good face up. Set your circular saw depth so the blade cuts about 5 mm (a quarter inch) into the foam or sacrificial sheet underneath. Because the whole panel is supported on both sides of the cut, nothing falls, nothing pinches the blade, and the offcut does not splinter as it drops. Working on the floor on foam is steady, safe and cheap, and it keeps the sheet from flexing while you push the saw.
Cut the long dimension first
Always make the long rip first. Turning one big, awkward sheet into two long pieces straight away makes everything after it easier to lift, measure and square up. With the panel split, the shorter crosscuts are simple because each piece is now a size you can actually handle on your own. A good cut order from your plan will tell you which long cut to make first, so you are never guessing what to break off next.
Rough cuts, then final cuts
Work in two passes. On the first pass, make rough cuts slightly oversize, say 5 to 10 mm (about a quarter to three eighths of an inch) larger than the finished size. This frees up clean, supported pieces and leaves room to correct any wander from the factory edge, which is rarely dead straight. Then take final cuts to the exact size with the smaller, lighter piece fully supported and a known straight edge to measure from. Two passes sound slower, but they give straighter, more accurate parts and far less wasted material than trying to nail every cut on the first try.
Use a track or guide rail
A circular saw freehand will not give you a straight cut over eight feet. Use a track saw, or clamp a straight edge or guide rail to your layout line and run the saw base against it. Set the rail so the blade sits on the waste side of the line, allowing for the saw kerf, then clamp both ends so it cannot creep while you cut. Keep the saw moving at a steady pace, let the blade do the work, and support the offcut so it does not bind at the end of the cut. Before you measure anything, check that your first reference edge is genuinely straight, because every later cut is squared off that edge.
Follow a cut order from your plan
Breaking down a sheet by eye wastes material and leads to mistakes.
