How much plywood do I need?

The quick estimate, and why it is not enough

The fast way to estimate is area math. Add up the area of every part you need, then divide by the area of one plywood sheet. A standard 4x8 ft sheet is 32 square feet, so if your parts add up to 80 square feet, that is 80 divided by 32, or about 2.5 sheets. Round up to 3 and you have a rough number to work with.

That number is useful for a first guess, but it almost always comes out too low. The problem is that area math assumes you can use every square inch of every sheet, which never happens in practice. Two things eat into the usable space:

The accurate way is a real layout

The only way to know how much plywood you truly need is to lay your parts out on actual sheets, fitting them like a puzzle and counting how many sheets it takes. Do this on paper and it is slow and easy to get wrong, especially once you have a dozen parts in different sizes.
