What an MDF cut list optimizer does

An MDF cut list optimizer takes the list of parts you need (their length, width and quantity) and works out how to lay them out on full MDF sheets with as little waste as possible. How to use it

  1. Enter your parts. Add each part with its length, width and quantity. Give parts a name so they are easy to match later when you mark up the panels.
  2. Pick your MDF sheet. Choose a standard 4x8 ft (1220x2440 mm) panel, a metric 2440x1220 mm sheet, or enter your own size. Set the thickness (1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 in are common) and add offcuts you already have so they get used first.
  3. Set the kerf. Enter the width your saw blade removes per cut. MDF is dense, so a clean cut matters, and the optimizer adds the kerf cumulatively so the parts come out exactly to size.
  4. Read the plan. The optimizer packs everything onto the fewest panels, shows the layout as a drawing, lists the cuts in order, and tells you how many sheets you need and how much is left over.

As an example, say you are cutting parts for a pair of paintable MDF floating wall shelves from one 2440 × 1220 × 18 mm sheet. MDF has no grain, so every part is free to rotate.
